The Risks of Untreated Bacterial Vaginosis
While many women seek out treatment for their BV, many women who are experiencing symptoms that aren’t too serious, choose to leave it alone. In addition, others who suffer from chroic or recurring bacterial vaginosis and have become frustrated with their lack of success, may choose not to continue their treatments because they seem to be a waste of time, effort and money.
So ladies, is leaving your BV untreated a reasonable option? In my opinion, the answer is a definite and resounding “NO”.
Here are some the risks associated with untreated BV:
1. Increased chances of developing pelvic inflammatory disease and endometritis which can, in turn, lead to scarring of your reproductive organs resulting in pain, pregnancy complications and even infertility.
2. Increased risk of STDs – There is a correlation between untreated bacterial vaginosis and HIV infection in those exposed to the virus. In addition, there is an increased risk of contracting less deadly but still very serious sexually transmitted diseases like herpes, gonorrhea, trichomoniasis and chlamydia. Of course, bacterial vaginosis does not automatically lead to infection of those exposed to STDs but it certainly does increase the the chances of contracting disease.
3. In women who are pregnant, bacterial vaginosis has been shown to increase the risks of late term miscarriage as well as spontaneous pre-term delivery and lower birth weights. In addition, BV increases the risk of contracting infection during delivery including postpartum sepsis, postpartum endometritis and infection
For all of the reasons, untreated bacterial vaginosis is definitely not a risk worth taking for most women. While it’s true that BV can be difficult to treat and frequently comes back, the risks of ignoring the problem far outweigh the aggravation and effort of coming up with an effective treatment strategy.
