Safe and Effective Natural BV Treatments

BV is caused by changes in vaginal pH will allow harmful bacteria to take over the vagina resulting in the classic symptoms – fishy odor, white or off-white discharge, itching (in some cases) and discomfort during sexual intercourse.  Doctors will often prescribe antibiotics for BV and some relief from the symptoms can be obtained by using over the counter products like Vagisil.

However, bacterial vaginosis can be stubborn and difficult to treat, in part because the exact science behind what causes BV is still somewhat of a mystery to the medical community.  For that reason, many women have turned to holistic bacterial vaginosis remedies and, in doing so, have found great success in treating their BV long-term.  Below are just a few natural BV cures that have proven to be effective.

Herbal BV Treatments -  There are actually quite a number of different herbs that can be used to treat BV .  For quick relief, try soaking a tampon in tea tree oil (which has excellent anti-bacterial properties) and inserting it into the vagina for several hours.  (Alternatively, mix some tea tree oil into a “sitz” bath and spend 45 minutes in the tub.)  In addition to tea tree oil, incorporate additional garlic into your diet.  Garlic is known to have anti-microbial properties.  You can either include more garlic in your diet or take a natural garlic supplement which can be found at any drug or natural health food store.

Echinacea and goldenseal are also highly effective for treating bacterial vaginosis.  For echinacea (which is actually excellent for treating all kinds of infection), take 1 to 2 g of dried root or herb, or 2 to 3 mL of liquid tincture, three times per day.  Goldenseal, which is sometimes included in echinacea supplements, is also great for fighting vaginal infection.  For best results, ingest 500 – 1000 mg three times per day.

Yogurt -  You’ve probably heard by now that yogurt is also a great natural BV remedy and it’s something that I recommend that every woman include as part of her treatment plan.  Yogurt is great because it contains beneficial bacterial cultures which aid the immune system in fighting BV and help to regulate the balance between the so-called “good” and “bad” bacteria in the vaginal cavity.   For an effective home remedy, eat yogurt containing active cultures at least once a day.  In addition, try soaking a tampon in organic, unflavored yogurt and inserting it into the vagina for 1 – 2 hours three times a week.

Using a combination of natural bv remedies is your best bet for fighting off bacterial vaginosis and preventing it from returning in the future.  I hope that you find these suggestions helpful.  If you’d like to connect with other BV sufferers and ask questions or share your story, please visit our forum!

Thanks Kathy. I too have had really good success with natural remedies. Not that drugs are all bad – I’m sure they work fine for some people, but I just didn’t’ see any permanent results. I guess it all depends on your own body but for me natural was definitely the way to go.
