Bacterial Vaginosis OTC Treatment
OTC Treatments for Bacterial Vaginosis.
Bacterial vaginosis, the most common vaginal infection among women, is caused by abnormal pH balance in the vagina which allows harmful bacteria to thrive, thus causing the BV infection and the typical symptoms associate with it – burning, itching and smelly discharge. Many factors can contribute to the pH imbalance including regular douching, multiple (or new) sexual partners and unprotected sex. If left untreated for any length of time, bacterial vaginosis can result in more serious complications and therefore, its important that you treat the condition right away.
While the most commonly prescribed treatment for bacterial vaginosis is antibiotics, many women have used over the counter treatments with some success. Here are a few of the most common:
1. Vaginal Douches – while regular douching can actually lead to BV, a properly formulated douche can actually be used as a treatment. Acidic treatments such as a boric acid douche or a vinegar douche composed of 1 tablespoon of vinegar diluted with 1 quart of water are an excellent way of returning the vagina’s pH balance to normal levels which destroys the gardnerella bacteria which causes BV and also prevents it from re-growing. Please note that, in some women, these types of douches may cause allergic reaction or vaginal irritation in which case I would recommend you stop using them.
2. Betadine Feminine Wash – Betadine feminine wash, also known as povidone iodine, is an OTC treatment for bacterial vaginosis which possesses antiseptic properties which inhibits fungal growth and treats the soreness and swelling associated with BV. While this treatment helps ease the symptoms of BV, I wouldn’t consider it a cure in and by itself but, rather, a helpful addition to your treatment regimen. Again, like the douches mentioned above, there is a risk of minor allergic reaction such as vaginal irritation.
3. Lactobacillus Acidophilus - Lactobacillus acidophilus is a probiotic (basically a good form of bacteria) that is used to treat many different medical conditions. More on probiotics and how they can help you cure BV here.
It’s considered beneficial due to the anti-microbial substances which it produces, most notably acidolin, acidolphilin, lactocidin and bacteriocin. For the treatment of bacterial vaginosis, lactobacillus acidophilus is usually administered in a capsule, tablet or vaginal suppository form.
Used in conjunction with other bacterial vaginosis medicines and natural remedies, these over the counter bacterial vaginosis treatments can provide immediate and, in some cases, long lasting relief. For those with chronic or recurring bacterial vaginosis, stronger treatment options, together with diet and lifestyle changes may be necessary in order to provide a permanent cure.
